In honor of this year’s Blog Action Day[2] theme of Water, I wanted to share some stunning images from the Flickr Commons. The images I have selected, contributed by cultural heritage institutions from around the world, show methods of transportation or acquisition of water. I will let the images speak for themselves below, but next time you go to turn on the tap water in your home – think of all of those for whom getting water is a huge challenge each and every day. While most of the images below are from decades ago, easy access to safe, clean water is still a current issue. Please consider supporting an organization like Charity: Water[3], a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.

I love your selection! The photostream of our organization, the Nationaal Archief, also has an image that I think goes well with this topic: [12] during World War I.

Great photos. I didn’t know about the Flickr commons. My daughter had to haul water when she was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, but when she left, she left 2 huge water tanks in the village, that collected water from a gravity feed spring. She put in the water line from spring to tank, and supervised the buildign of the tanks. My Blog Action Day post takes a different aspect of water waste and hazard.
